How to Correctly Care For Your Mask

WHY WEAR A MASK?

Wearing a mask is the right thing to do if you care about your health and the well being of others. It is a bit awkward at first. But we think you’ll adjust quickly - just like we did two years ago when we lived in Vietnam where EVERYONE wears a mask.

Whenever you’re in a public setting like a grocery store or pharmacy you should wear a mask to protect yourself and others. Talking, coughing and sneezing can release tiny drops into the air. The Coronavirus can be transmitted through this aerosol. Wearing a mask can limit the spread of this aerosol by both protecting the wearer and those around them. If the wearer is sick, a mask reduces the distance their germs spread. If the wearer is healthy, a mask can limit their exposure.

To help you love your mask or resist wearing a bit less, we’ve answered every burning question (please don’t microwave yours please) we could think of about masks.

MASK DON’TS

Don’t put masks on children under two years old, or individuals who have trouble breathing or cannot remove the mask themselves.

Medical masks are for health care professionals and are short supply. Do not buy and hoard medical masks. Health care professionals need them urgently to protect themselves and their ill patients.

Don’t remove the mask by the mouth!

Don’t substitute a standard bandana or scarf for a mask. A mask needs multiple layers to be effective. 

PUTTING ON YOUR MASK

  1. Wash your hands with soap and water or apply hand sanitizer before touching the mask.

  2. Gently inspect the mask to ensure it the breathable material is not compromised with holes or tears.

  3. Identify the top portion of the mask. A somewhat stiff bendable edge goes on the top and maybe molded to the shape of the nose.

  4. If your mask has a lining the colored or patterned side should face outward while the white part touches your face.

  5. If the face mask has ear loops, hold the mask by the loops and place each around an ear.

  6. If the face mask has ties, hold the mask by the ties and place the mask on the bridge of your nose. Bring the ties behind your head and tie with a bow.

  7. If your face mask has bands, hold the mask by the top band, placing the top of the mask on the bridge of the nose while pulling the top strap over your head so that it rests covers the crown of your head. While holding the mask, pull the bottom strap over your head until it rests on the back of your neck.

  8. Once the mask is covering your mouth, adjust it for a secure fit.


TAKING OFF YOUR MASK

  1. Wash your hands with soap and water or apply hand sanitizer before putting on disposable gloves. The front of the mask has been exposed and is contaminated - Do Not touch it. Release the ear loops, ties, or bands.

  2. If your mask has ear loops, and gently lift the loop from the ear and remove the mask.

  3. If your mask has ties, untie the bottom and lift the mask away from you.

  4. If your mask has bands, clasp the bottom strap and pull up and over your head. The top strap should follow.

  5. Place the contaminated mask in the washing machine or hot soapy water. Clean your hands with soap and water or hand sanitizer.

CLEANING YOUR CLOTH MASKS

  1. Wash it after every use. Whether you go to the grocery store, pharmacy or park, immediately remove the mask and place it in the washing machine.

  2. Do not shake your mask when removing it. This minimizes the possibility of dispersing virus through the air.

  3. Launder mask in the warmest appropriate water setting.

  4. Hang your mask to dry or use the air-dry setting on the dryer. Dry heat can weaken the elastic ear loops.  

  5. Hand-washing your mask? Wet the mask and rub the entire mask vigorously with detergent or soap for 30 seconds. Let the mask soak for 30 minutes in hot water and rinse. Line or hang dry on a sanitized surface.

  6. Have spare masks. Spring is here, and states are re-opening. To ensure your and your family’s health and that of your community, considering adding extra masks so you can always have a clean one in rotation.  

  7. Consider keeping your mask in a pouch to ensure it’s protected and not coming in contact with possible contaminants.

  8. We discourage microwaving masks as it can create a fire hazard.
